Build resilient systems

"An escalator can never break, it can only become stairs." Mitch Hedburg

This quote was tweeted out this week in relation to my day job as a web developer. The discussion was about progressive enhancement in web design ensuring the basic system will work regardless of how the user is accessing it. There is a significant overlap in the principles involved with prepping. In web design we have to consider whether the site will still work in old browsers, without javascript, plugins, and/or images, and on any size screen. Likewise we need to consider how lack of power, temperature changes, and the actions of other people affect the sustainability of our systems.

They may do the same basic job but there is a big difference between the functionality of an escalator and an elevator during a power failure. Make sure you are making resilient choices in your preps.
